Got Mommy Issues?

I recently ran across an article on the internet about celebrities who are estranged from their parents. One of the celebrities listed was Oprah Winfrey. Yes, you read that correctly. We all know Oprah as this power house media mogul and philanthropist. What many don’t know is what she has overcome. After reading this article, I immediately began to think of the hurt these celebrities have endured.
The hurt of feeling alone and unloved. The hurt of feeling you’re not enough. The hurt of not feeling worthy of receiving love or knowing how to love.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Most people know someone who has been or is currently involved in an abusive relationship.
Domestic Violence has been defined as acts of aggression against a family member or individual cohabitating that results in physical and or emotional harm. There are subgroups within domestic violence that consist of childhood physical or sexual abuse, spousal abuse, and elderly abuse.

Child abuse may consist of intentional injuries that are a direct result of an act of violence by a parent or caretaker.

Busy is the New Happy

I recently saw a picture posted on a social networking site that read "Busy is the New Happy". I immediately thought "YES"! It reminded me of a saying I often heard growing up: "An idle mind is the devil's playground". Now that I'm older, I've come to understand this simply implies be mindful of your thoughts. Negative thoughts can become destructive leading to low self-worth. This is a concept I teach clients who feel stuck, unmotivated, or who are not feeling good about themselves.

Welcome

Welcome and thank you for visiting!

I am excited to announce that Open Arms Counseling Center is officially open for business and accepting new clients. I will use this blog as a platform to share news about the practice, provide information on managing stress/health and wellness, and anything else related to serving the community.

I enjoy working in this field because it is very rewarding to help someone in need and observe their progress over time. At times, it honestly doesn't feel like work.
